Manga (kanji: 漫画; hiragana: まんが; katakana: マンガ; listen (help·info)) (English: /ˈmɑːŋɡə/ or /ˈmæŋɡə/) consist of comics and print cartoons (sometimes also called komikku コミック), in the Japanese language and conforming to the style developed in Japan in the late 19th century. In their modern form, manga date from shortly after World War II, but they have a long, complex pre-history in earlier Japanese art.

In Japan, people of all ages read manga. The genre includes a broad range of subjects: action-adventure, romance, sports and games, historical drama, comedy, science fiction and fantasy, mystery, horror, sexuality, and business/commerce, among others. Since the 1950s, manga have steadily become a major part of the Japanese publishing industry, representing a 406 billion yen market in Japan in 2007 (approximately $3.6 billion). Manga have also become increasingly popular worldwide. In 2008, the U.S. and Canadian manga market was $175 million. Manga are typically printed in black-and-white, although some full-color manga exist (e.g. Colorful). In Japan, manga are usually serialized in telephone book-size manga magazines, often containing many stories, each presented in a single episode to be continued in the next issue. If the series is successful, collected chapters may be republished in paperback books called tankōbon. A manga artist (mangaka in Japanese) typically works with a few assistants in a small studio and is associated with a creative editor from a commercial publishing company. If a manga series is popular enough, it may be animated after or even during its run, although sometimes manga are drawn centering on previously existing live-action or animated films (e.g. Star Wars).

"Manga" as a term used outside Japan refers specifically to comics originally published in Japan. However, manga-influenced comics, among original works, exist in other parts of the world, particularly in Taiwan ("manhua"), South Korea ("manhwa"), and the People's Republic of China, notably Hong Kong ("manhua"). In France, "la nouvelle manga" has developed as a form of bande dessinée (literally drawn strip) drawn in styles influenced by Japanese manga. In the United States, people refer to manga-like comics as Amerimanga, world manga, or original English-language manga (OEL manga).

How are professional manga artists in Japan making their manga?
Q. Are they still using the traditional methods of inking and toning on manga paper? Or has manga software taken over the industry?
Asked by Kat - Fri Nov 27 16:36:11 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Some do, but software and digital methods have been adopted by many (just as in the US) due to the increased speed and greater flexibility of the digital software methods (and it's considerably cheaper). Quite a few of American comic writers have had their handwriting digitally converted to digital fonts even. A lot of new comic artists or hobbyists will use the old paper methods but if once they start going professional and work with established companies they're going to have a lot of pressure to adopt digital methods. If you're starting out, I strongly suggest you try to learn to work digitally. It's cheaper than constantly buying supplies, faster, you can correct mistakes easier (Undo!) and you'll be able to produce your comics in… [cont.]

What Manga chapter in Naruto corresponds to the Anime Naruto Shippuden Episode 141?
Q. I've been watching the anime a lot now, but I would like to start getting into reading manga too. So can anyone tell me the manga that corresponds with the Shippuden Episode 141? Thanks.

A. Episode 141 ends with Naruto chapter 402, "Last Words". Meaning that if you want to read from there, you should start with chapter 403, "Tears". Here's a link: Enjoy. :3

When drawing manga, how important is the background?
Q. I've been tryng to look at how my starter manga is different from published manga, and I started seeing that the real ones have more of a backgroundy-type theme, where almost every 'box' has a screen tone. I've also noticed that they try to stick in multiple charecters in one square, with almost full-body pictures. >_< Just trying to improve!

A. It really depends on the effect you are trying to achieve. But you're right, professional manga does have allot of background and allot of full body shots but so does western comics. They use it to add a more dynamic look to the full page and to add more interest. It also helps with adding action. You will find most comics are set out like this and only really short comic 'sketches' are portrayed in a series of small boxes that only show part of the figure, and those don't seem to feacher in manga (that I've seen).
